Hosting looks like the easiest job on the bill and is the hardest one being done. The host carries the only light in the room and spends the whole night pointing it away from herself — at the debut, at the nervous one, at the runner-up who has eleven seconds to be brave about it. When it works, nobody remembers the host was working. They remember that everyone shone.
Every good dinner table runs on the same physics. So does every good team. Someone is holding the light, and the room can tell where it is pointed.
